What To Do During The Interview: For Young Africans

Definitely your Curriculum Vitae (Resume), cover letter may get the hiring officer’s attention and you get the interview date but whether you get the job offer totally depends on what you do, what you say and how you say it. From the gate or door you walk through to the last shake as you walk out of the interview premises, the tips below will help you learn how to behave during an interview

1. Keep a positive and friendly attitude. Be friendly, polite and remember to smile

2. Keep all your mobile and other devices turned off. Don’t keep on vibration a phone set to vibrate will interrupt the meeting

3. Make a good first impression with a nice, firm handshake but not forceful-grip and make strong eye contact

4. Body language is very important during the interview. Display confidence through body language, don’t look down when you are speaking

5. Speak very audible and express yourself when giving your answers.

6. Always do your best to frame your answers so that they can relate to the job and try to make the hiring officer or the interview panel to see why you are the best candidate for the job

7. Be very honest in response, don’t fake answers

8. Be ready with an open mind to curve-ball questions you did not expect and take your time answering. You can ask for some time to think if you need a second to formulate your thoughts

9. Don’t try to answer questions you did not understand. If you ar unsure of what the interviewer is asking, politely request a more detailed explanation

10. Sit when you are asked to sit, not before

11. Introduce yourself to the receptionist and to everyone you meet in the interview
